“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” (Galatians 5:1, NKJV)
This weekend we will be celebrating the freedom that we have as a nation. Freedom is something that we don’t take for granted. A great price has been paid for our freedom. Our armed forces will defend freedom boldly. President George Bush, when 911 occurred, said, “Today freedom has been attacked by a faceless coward, and freedom will be defended.” And by the grace of God, we are still a free nation. Our national anthem proclaims “the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
But are we really free? As individuals, we may find ourselves slaves to sin, slaves to our sinful nature. In shackles that we can’t break on our own. Thoughts we can’t control, words we wish we hadn’t said, actions we take that are self-serving. All these things show just how much we are slaves to sin.
Thankfully Jesus broke the shackles of sin and Satan. He willingly allowed the punishment we deserved to be placed on Him. On resurrection morning, he shattered the chains of sin and death. And today for whosoever will, His cross stamps freedom on their very soul, and that is real freedom.
God Bless, Pastor Rick
