“Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” Mark 9:24
Faith does not come from ignorance but is based on what we know. Before we will trust others with something precious to us, we first try instinctively to find out if they are trustworthy. The father in this verse was really asking Jesus for help so that he might come to know God in such a dimension that he could trust Him to cure his son.
An evil spirit had possessed the father’s son since his early childhood and though the father did not know Jesus well, he knew enough of him to know that if there were to be any hope for his son, it would come from Jesus. The father had correctly gone to Jesus with his problem even though he was struggling with fully understanding everything about Jesus. You will never increase your faith by avoiding Jesus! Through the power of the Holy Spirit, He will help you with your belief. He will increase your measure of faith as you come to know Him. The Apostle Paul once said, “that I might know Him…” I hope we all strive to have the same attitude as Paul.
If you find yourself struggling to believe that God can take care of your needs, take some time this week and ask God how it is that He wants you to know Him. Do not avoid Him but continue to go to Him and allow Him to convince you of His ability to meet every need you have in life.
