Surrender and Obedience to God Comes First

Week of September 13, 2019

“For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men - the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.” Mark 7:8 (NKJV)

Traditions and rituals have always played an important role in society.  This is also true in the church.  Congregational life and practices are largely controlled by traditions, rituals, and church ordinances.

It is essential to adhere to rules so that everything can run smoothly, but it is of utmost importance that these rules don’t become the dominant controlling factor in any Christian community.

The foundation of what we do is not following traditions and rituals but giving devotion and obedience to God that rises from our love for Jesus Christ.  His will takes precedence over the will of people.

So, to be a channel of the love of God, surrender yourself unconditionally to the Holy Spirit first and then use the traditions and rituals of denominational life in a way that reflects the love of Christ.
